Safety Check List

          Platform bolts tight
          No cracks or broken welds on the Platform
          No cracks or broken welds on the Hitch Head
          Ball tight, not worn
          Sway bars – not bent, no cracks, bolts tight, trunions not worn
          Stirrups – tight, no worn pivots
          Coupler pin operational (no padlocks)
          Break away switch working & lubricated
          Break away cable proper length (not too long)
          Break away connection to tow vehicle – solid and not on hitch component
          Safety chains proper length (not too long)
          Safety chain connections proper – not “S” hooks
          Electrical connector – no breaks or scrapes – connectors clean &  lubricated


          Tight on mountings
          No leaks – check entire system (10 minutes, no red flag)
          Certification current
          Up to date with latest safety valve (triangular handle)


          Lug nuts tight
          No cracks in the wheel
          Good tire pressure
          No cracks in the tire rubber
          Good tire tread


          All running lights work
          Turn signal lights work
          Stop lights work
          Back up lights work


          Smoke detector working – replace batteries at beginning of year
          Fire extinguisher(s) charged


          Grease the spring bars every 1000 miles
          Check U-Bolts on the frame mounting brackets every 5000 miles. Torque U- Bolt nuts to 45 Ft.
          Check that strut bars are tight and properly adjusted
          Oil each jack screw through oil holes in top of the outer jack screw tube.
          Check that spring bar U-Bracket mounting bolts are tight.  Torque to 30 Ft. Lbs.
          Check that all pins and clevis pins are in place and seated properly. (Look for excessive wear
          on the pins)
          Check spring bar link mounting holes for excessive wear.  Also check the pin for
          excessive wear.  Replace both if needed.  (The lower holes can wear through if not checked
          Grease the hitch ball and coupler yearly
          Carry a Hensley spare parts kit (a spare zerk grease fitting should be in the kit)


          Remove covers from tires and thoroughly inspect them for damage. 
          Inflate the tires to the correct pressure for the actual weight on the tires.
          Remove any obstructions from engine and transmission openings.
          Check engine compartment for obstructions or animal nests.
          Check for fluid leaks.  Repair as necessary.
          Check engine oil level.  Add oil if needed.
          Check coolant level in reservoir and radiator (do not open cap on hot engine).
          Check hydraulic fluid level in reservoir.  Add fluid if needed.
          Check engine belts for wear, damage or excessive cracking.
          Check engine fan for damage.
          Check fuel water separator.  If empty, prime fuel system per instructions in your operators
          Check for leaks and damage to hoses and wiring.
          Check rear axle lubricant.
          Lubricate chassis and drive train.
          Check that batteries are full and charged.
          Clean ends of battery cables
          Turn the ignition to RUN position.  Verify that the fuel and volt meters are operating properly.
          With hydraulic brakes, check to make sure that the electric brake pump runs with the engine
          not running.  Bleed and adjust brakes if necessary.
          Run engine until warm.  Re-check for fluid leaks.
          Check transmission fluid level using the Cold check method in your Allison transmission
          operators manual.  Add fluid if necessary.
          Check all exterior lights and replace as necessary.
